Genealogy By the States – Week 26 – Michigan

Michigan

Michigan is very near and dear to my heart.  Some of my favorite ancestors are associated with Michigan.  In fact, two of my fifth great-grandfathers were early settlers in Oakland County, arriving while Michigan was still a territory in the early 1820s.  While a lot of my research is in Oakland County, my family is actually all over the state; they can be found in 64 of the current 83 counties in Michigan.  Looking at the map, that’s a lot of places to research for a single state!

For a list of Michigan resources, check out my Diigo library.  Be sure to check back often or follow the RSS feed as I am always adding to it.

Free Access to Irish Records on findmypast.com

The other day, I received the following email announcing that Irish records on findmypast.com will be available for FREE today through Sunday (6/27-6/30).  To see what types of Irish records FMP has, click here and scroll down to almost the end of the page…you will see a list of Irish Records at the end of the right-hand column.

FMP-Logo

Free Access to Irish Records on findmypast.com June 27-30

On June 30, 1922, the Public Records Office of Ireland, located at the historic Four Courts in Dublin, caught fire during the Irish Civil War. Tragically a considerable amount of Irish records were destroyed.

The fire has had lasting effects – still felt today – as Irish family history requires a unique approach to research than other heritages. To commemorate this anniversary and encourage exploration of Irish genealogy, findmypast.com will offer its full collection of Irish Birth, Marriage and Death indexes free of charge from June 27 to June 30. Anyone searching for their Irish ancestors can access the full Irish record collection by registering for free at findmypast.com

Despite a great loss of records in the historic fire, there are still many opportunities to discover Irish heritage, with countless fascinating stories to be found from the records that survived.

Genealogy By the States – Week 24 – Missouri

Missouri

I really don’t do much research in the state of Missouri, although I wish I had more relatives to research because records are pretty accessible.  In preparation of this post, I checked my database to see what families were associated with Missouri, and as I suspected, not many.  However, I did find the family of my husband’s great-grandaunt, Sarah Frances (Orendorff) Jonagan, who moved from Fulton County, Illinois, to Gentry County, Missouri, sometime between 1870 and 1880.

I knew there were actual vital records online, but I didn’t know exactly what, where, or the time periods of coverage.  It appeared from my research that I had previously exhausted everything on Ancestry, finding a few birth and marriage records.  But where were the death records…I could have sworn they were online somewhere.

So off to my Diigo bookmarks for Missouri I went.  I spotted a resource I had added back in 2010, Missouri Digital Heritage, and by the description I had added, I was pretty certain I would find the death records.  And there they were, Missouri Death Certificates!  Digital images of Missouri death certificates are currently available for 1910 to 1962.

A surname-only search produced a handful of death certificates related to the family.  I love when records are online and accessible!  Makes my research so much easier!!

Genealogy By the States – Week 22 – Alabama

Alabama

Not much connection to Alabama, other than two of my stepsisters and their families currently living there.  But I did decide to check out the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) Digital Collections.

They have some pretty neat things including a photograph collection that contains over 15,000 images from the ADAH holdings.  You can browse the images by category (e.g., Civil War, Houses, Transportation) or time period.  Or you can search on keywords, such as a name or location.

ADHA

I found the photo above by browsing the Houses category.  When you view the photo, there are additional details such as a description, time period, subject listing, and where in the archives collection the photo is located.

There’s some interesting items in the digital collection, so if you have Alabama roots, you should certainly check it out!

Genealogy By the States – Week 21 – Illinois

Illinois

Between me and my husband, there are many relatives associated with many places Illinois.

map

My mind was spiraling out of control with the many things I could write about for this post. Ultimately I decided to share my growing list of online resources.

I’ve shared in the past that I use a bookmarking site called Diigo to manage all of my genealogy bookmarks (you can read more here and you can also check out the guide I developed here).  The Illinois Genealogy list is my largest locality-specific list.  It contains all sorts of resources that I use all the time in my own research.  Maybe some of them will help you too!  Be sure to check back often or follow the RSS feed as I am always adding to it.

Genealogy By the States – Week 20 – Mississippi

Mississippi

Not one person in my database has ties to Mississippi.  So off to my Diigo bookmarks to see what resources I had for Mississippi.  Only a few, but one seemed pretty interesting.  It’s called Mississippi History Now, which is an online publication of the Mississippi Historical Society.

There are a variety of articles covering an array of topics.  You can browse or search the articles.  They are even broken down into topics, such as Civil War and General History.  Want to learn more about Mississippi when it was under British rule?  There’s an article for that.  What about catfish farming?  There’s an article for that too, along with a recipe for fried catfish.

It’s a pretty neat site…I encourage you to explore it at your leisure!

Family History Through the Alphabet – Research Guidance

Family-History-Through-the-Alphabet

For 26 weeks I will take you on a family history journey through the alphabet, one letter at a time.  I have decided that each post will be educational in nature, focusing on topics related to resources, methodology, tools, etc.  Although the challenge is complete, there are still some people who are finishing up and Alona, the host, is encouraging others to participate anyway.  Additional information on the challenge, can be found at Take the ‘Family History Through the Alphabet’ Challenge

rA lot of times we learn how to do genealogy research by trial and error.  We eventually seek out resources to help us learn more about how to research and how to use certain record types.  When we are really stuck, or exploring a locality that is new to us, we may look for resources to help us with research in a particular country or state.  Below is a list of references that you may find useful in guiding your genealogy research adventure.

General Genealogy How-To

Record-Specific and Topic-Specific

Locality-Specific (Countries)

Locality-Specific (States)

This list is by no means all-inclusive.  If you are looking for something about a topic I did not mention, you might try to search for books using one of the following websites.  They are all good places to start to see if books exist for a particular topic.  When you find a particular book title, you can either see if a library near you has it among their collection, ask your local library to borrow it through inter-library loan, or, if still in print, look for places to purchase the book.

  • WorldCat – This is a massive online catalog showing the collections of participating libraries.  The book’s detail page lists what libraries have a particular book.
  • Google Books – Even though you probably think of digitized out-of-copyright books when you think of Google Books, it’s important to note that they do include other books in their “catalog,” including those published recently.
  • Genealogical Publishing Company – Publishes tons of genealogy-related books including how-to books.  Browse the General Reference and Guides and Manuals categories for how-to books.
  • Amazon – This is a major online book retailer, but they often include listings of out-of-print books.  You may be able to purchase a used copy through individual sellers through their website.

Genealogy By the States – Week 19 – Indiana

Indiana

I actually do have several people in my database associated with Indiana.  Most of them are very distant relatives or related to my husband.  But one family is that of a great-grandaunt, who left Illinois and lived in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.  It’s a very tangled web, one with multiple marriages and questions of paternity.  While I think I have most of the story figured out, there is still some work to be done.

I thought I’d share with you some of the online resources that have been helpful in my quest.  I know this week is about Indiana, but the family I’m working with was situated in places in Michigan and Ohio that were near Indiana so I’m including those resources as well.
