CAHILL, 558 Arlington, Elmhurst, Illinois MLS Listing 02

This is the MLS listing for the house my dad grew up in.  With all the “reconstruction” going on in Elmhurst, I wonder if it’s still standing, or if it’s been torn down with a McMansion built in its place.

Looking for Chicago Ancestors?

If you are in search of Chicago ancestors, you might try connecting with others through the Chicago Genealogical Society’s new Surname Database.  This new online database lists the surname, dates/location, and an email address for the person who is researching the name.   Be sure to check back often, as it is continually being updated.

My Irish Surnames

The theme for the 13th edition of the Carnival of Irish Heritage and Culture is Irish names.

Share with us the surnames in your Irish family tree, but don't just stop there. Do a little research and tell us the origin of one or more of those surnames, the stories of how they might have changed over the years, or tales of how they've been mixed up and misspelled, etc.

Want to focus on your family's given names instead? Share with us the story of your ancestors' Irish first names (given at birth or nicknamed later), the "grandparent" nicknames in your Irish family tree, or any other Irish name stories that you'd like to share.

I decided to focus on four of my Irish surnames.  All of them become brick walls when trying to research them in Ireland, so I thought this surname exercise might help open new doors.

Each surname heading is a link to the Internet Surname Database record for the surname, which you can use to find out more information about the surname.

Cahill

Many of the resources I have found indicate that Cahills were prevalent in County Clare, County Cork, County Kerry, and County Tipperary.  Right now, I can trace my Cahills back to my third great-grandfather, Michael Cahill, who lived in County Kilkenny.  Do they trace back further to these other counties?  I hope to answer that question someday.

Researching this name in the U.S. hasn’t been too bad.  More often than not, it is spelled and indexed correctly.  I know of many spelling variations, such as Cale, Cail, Cahil, Cahell, Kahill, Khill, Cayhill, Kayhill, and the original form of the name, O’Cahill.  And although I haven’t had too much trouble, it is on this surname that I thought of creative ways to perform searches.  You can read more about that in my post Bingo! (and a few lessons learned).

McMahon

I can trace my McMahons back to my third great-grandfather, Timothy McMahon, of County Tipperary (which was kindly noted on his son’s death certificate).  I have not done much research on this surname outside of the U.S. as of yet.

This surname can be tricky while doing research.  I’ve found that it’s usually spelled correctly, however, when indexed, it can be McMahon or Mc Mahon.  So I always have to do at least two search passes to find whomever I am looking for.  In the U.S., I’ve not run across any instances where Mac is used instead of Mc, but I always include that in my searches when I can’t find Mc, just in case.

Ryan

This is an interesting one for me.  I have two Ryans, both third great-grandmothers, but from two different lines in my paternal line.  Margaret Ryan hails from County Tipperary, where she married Timothy McMahon (above).  I have no idea as to the whereabouts of Mary Ryan, who was born in Ireland and likely died there.  She married John Millet, and their daughter, Margaret, married into my Cahill line.  I do know that their daughter was born in County Kilkenny, so at least that’s a starting point.  I do wonder if Mary and Margaret are related somehow, but have yet to track down their parents.

Mulligan

I can trace my Mulligans back to my third great-grandfather, James Mulligan, of Dublin.  Again, this is one I have not focused on outside of the U.S.  I imagine it will be an interesting search, simply because Mulligan is a popular name, and Dublin is, well, the largest city in Ireland!

This was not in my attic.  A few weeks ago, when my cousins came for a visit, I got a neat little present from my aunt.  It's a box of family photos!  This was a wonderful gift and I can't wait to go through all of them and get them scanned in so I have digital copies.  Thanks, Aunt Maureen!

Weekly Genealogy Blogging Prompt #18

Prompt:  Showcase a favorite blog or blogger. This is a great way to share some blog love and introduce readers to new genealogy writers.

This is certainly a toughie, considering there are so many wonderful genealogy blogs out there.  So I made this easy on myself and chose one that is very new, yet exceptional.

Irish Genealogical Research has only been up and running since April, but already has some wonderful posts.  Since my dad’s side is Irish, this blog will be a first-stop for me to help me in my research.  If you are of Irish descent, I highly recommend you check out this blog!!

Pampered Pets: Nova & Dakota

The word prompt for the 13th Edition of Smile For The Camera is All Creatures Great And Small.

Show us a photograph of the family pet. The pet that made it into every family snapshot. That pampered pet your ancestors took to the photographic studio to immortalize in an expensive photograph. The best friend who was there for your ups and downs. Bring them to the carnival and share with us how they were loved through the ages. Admission is free with every photograph!

Nova was my first-ever (and so far only) cat.  I never had one growing up and once I was out on my own, I wanted one.  That was 12 years ago!  My husband came into the picture after him, and naturally, he “adopted” Nova.  About a year-and-a-half ago, my husband and I decided to finally get a dog.  We’d been going back-and-forth for years, but the opportunity came when we heard of a chocolate lab puppy that needed a new home ASAP.  So, Dakota came home with us when he was just seven months old.  Nearly a year-and-a-half later, the cat and dog still do NOT get along.  The cat pretty much rules the house and he just doesn’t like the dog AT ALL!  But we manage; sibling rivalry I guess.  So here are some pics of our pampered pets.

What's in this big blue bin?

Why, it's the last of my grandfather's miniatures!  This is it.  This is all that's left.  I need to go through this box and see what's inside, as I have no idea.  I also plan to divvy up the contents amongst myself and my three cousins, so we all have some of these fantastic pieces.  Of course, I see them next weekend, so I better get a move on!

Weekly Genealogy Blogging Prompt #16

Prompt:  Goals. Not just for resolutions anymore. Write down your genealogy goals. Then you can look back and see what you’ve accomplished.

Back in December, I made my genealogy-related New Year's Resolutions, which are as follows:

  • Accept that try as I might, I cannot always find the answer.
  • Learn more about the lives of my ancestors, focusing more on the how and why, not just the who, what, when, and where.
  • Blog more, by sharing my ancestors' stories and helping fellow family historians.
  • Transcribe more records than I did in 2008.
  • Make a decision as to what level I want to take genealogy to (the family historian? a professional? another direction?) and make a plan for how to get there.

These are very general, and over the last few months, I have developed more specific goals that I am now focusing on.  Here's what I plan to work on and hope to accomplish by the end of the year:

Implement a website devoted to my family tree.  While Ancestry's public/private trees a wonderful, it's not very easy to update them; you have to upload a new one and delete the old one.  If I had a public tree, this would not be so much of an issue, but with a private tree, I have to go back and re-invite people to give them access to the new updated tree.  With my own site, I can maintain access myself and update as needed.

With my recent admission into the DAR, I've already started to involve myself in some volunteer projects.  One in particular deals with inputting application data into a database.  You download ten applications at a time.  I figure if I can do ten a week, I will have completed 340 application entries by the end of the year.  As much as I'd love to devote all of my time to my research, I feel it's important to help others as well, and this is one way to do it.

Also DAR-related, is proving another ancestor's service.  I originally tried to go in under Joseph PARKS, my seventh great-grandfather, but they are now questioning his service.  Instead of having me prove it, they had me go in under his son, Robert (my sixth great-grandfather), who's service was proven.  So one of my new goals is to prove Joseph's service.  I hope to complete this by the end of the year, but realize this one might take more time.

There you have it.  Three of my major goals for this year.
