My paternal grandfather was a volunteer firefighter for many years in Coopersville, Ottawa Co., Michigan, but I doubt very much he had a badge. I know that my dad and his siblings (and later me and mine) could not have balloons when we were young children, because as a firefighter and emergency crew personnel, Grandpa arrived at two different homes in his career where small children had died when balloons they had in their mouths died of suffocation.
Grandpa also always had pre-made escape ropes made of sheets tied to the feet of every bed on the second floor bedrooms of his home.
I think I might join you for Saturday in the Attic, although it may be on another day of the week. You have the best blogging ideas, Julie!
Miriam,
Thanks for sharing your story. I don't know much about what he did...it's one of the questions on my list for my mom.
