Surname Saturday – REEDER (France / Georgia / Iowa / Illinois)

Mary Eva REEDER (or LASSER) is my second great-grandmother. I am not certain if Reeder or Lasser is her maiden name because each of the records I currently have list one or the other. I suppose it's possible that she was married once before and that one of the names could be a married name. Perhaps one day I will know the answer, but for now, I'm sticking with Reeder. This family has been difficult to research for many reasons, but mainly because they moved around the country several times.  My direct line ancestors are in blue.

First Generation

1. Mary1 Eva REEDER was born Cal 18 March 1849 in France and died on 26 October 1889 in Iowa, probably in Linn County. Mary married Phillip ROTTMAN before 1870, possibly in France. Phillip was born about 1835 in Bavaria, Germany, and died on 24 June 1885 in Golden, Jefferson, Colorado.

Children from this marriage were:

i.
John2 W ROTTMAN was born in July 1870 in Henry County, Georgia, and died before 11 October 1937 in Linn County, Iowa.
3
ii.
Louise ROTTMAN was born on 19 October 1871 in McDonough, Henry, Georgia, and was baptized on 27 May 1873 in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky. She likely died before June 1880.
4
iii.
Gottlieb ROTTMAN was born 14 January 1873 in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, was baptized on 27 May 1873 in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, and died on 10 July 1873 probably in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, where he is buried.
5
iv.
Anna E ROTTMAN was born in April 1874 in Missouri and died in 1964. Anna first married Joseph W ZARUB on 24 December 1896 in Marion, Linn, Iowa. Joseph was born in February 1874 in Iowa. Anna married second, Jacob M HOAG on 18 December 1912 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Jacob was born in 1871 in Illinois and died in 1949.
6
v.
Malissa Elizabeth ROTTMAN was born in 1875 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died between 1896 and 1900. “Lizzie” married Joseph RUSHEK on 6 April 1896 in Big Grove, Johnson, Iowa. Joseph was born on 13 August 1874 in Solon, Johnson, Iowa.

7

vi.

Charles Henry ROTTMAN was born on 11 August 1877 in Ivanhoe, Linn, Iowa, and died on 11 February 1927 in Wilton, Muscatine, Iowa. Charles married Rosanna Elizabeth "Anna" BEATTY on 14 April 1899 in Cedar Rapids, Linn, Iowa. Rosanna was born on 25 November 1880 in Sugarcreek, Cedar, Iowa, and died on 24 July 1958 in Wilton, Muscatine, Iowa. They had 13 children.

8

vii.

Mabel Louise ROTTMAN was born on 28 September 1879 and died on 1 April 1961. Mabel married Paul Frederick William HAASE on 8 May 1901 in Solon, Johnson, Iowa. Paul was born on 3 May 1877 in Germany. They had two children.

George ROTTMAN was born on 19 June 1882 in Mount Vernon, Linn, Iowa, and died on 19 February 1946 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Second Generation

2. John2 W ROTTMAN (Mary1 Eva Reeder) was born in July 1870 in Henry County, Georgia, and died before 11 October 1937 in Linn County, Iowa. John married Melvina E HORN, daughter of Samuel HORN and Mary A MARSHALL, on 31 December 1891 in Lisbon, Linn, Iowa. Melvina was born in October 1862 in Johnson County, Iowa, and died in 1944.

Children from this marriage were:

Anna was born on 19 January 1887 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, died on 12 June 1936 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. It is possible that George was married once prior to Anna (still working on this).

Children from this marriage were:
12
i.
Edward3 George ROTTMAN was born on 14 December 1915 in Illinois, and died on 10 January 1968 in Mundelein, Lake, Illinois. He served in the US Army during World War II. Edward married Helen –?after 1940. Helen was born on 23 November 1920 and died on 23 December 1999 in Wisconsin.

Surname Saturday – Ward (Ireland / Illinois)

My WARD line is one of my more challenging lines.  The earliest known ancestor is my third great-grandfather, James WARD and I don’t know much about him.  He was apparently married prior to marrying my third great-grandmother, Bridget, but I have no information about his first wife.  The only clues come from the 1880 census, which shows James with three additional children, all born before James and Bridget married.

And, for the longest time, I though Bridget’s maiden name was Shevlin/Shevlan, but after some digging and a closer look at their marriage certificate, I’m not so sure; she may have been married previously as well.  A lot of mystery around this family.  Here’s what I know so far.  My direct line ancestors are in blue.

First Generation

1. James1 WARD was born about 1840 in Ireland.  I suspect he died between 1887 and 1890.  James married first, an unknown woman.

Known children from this marriage were:
2
i.
May2 WARD was born about 1861 in New York.
3
ii.
Phillip WARD was born about 1866 in Massachusetts.
4
iii.
John WARD was born about 1868 in Illinois.
James married second, Bridget Shevlin (not sure if this is her maiden name or a married name) on 17 May 1874 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Bridget was born about 1838 in Ireland and died on 19 July 1912 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Known children from this marriage were:
+ 5
i.
Sarah2 Jane WARD was born on 7 April 1875 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 8 October 1956 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.
6
ii.
Rosanna WARD was born on 19 December 1877 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. I believe that Rosanna married John O’Connor on 21 December 1910 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois and that they had at least two children.

Second Generation

5. Sarah2 Jane WARD (James1) was born on 7 April 1875 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 8 October 1956 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.  Sarah married Timothy James McMAHON, son of Timothy McMAHON and Margaret RYAN, on 11 November 1899 in Lake County, Indiana.  Timothy was born on 14 May 1874 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 14 October 1939 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Children from this marriage were:
+ 7
i.
John3 Ward McMAHON was born on 7 April 1902 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 24 June 1962 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.
8
ii.
Timothy G "Thomas" McMAHON was born on 17 March 1904 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 10 January 1969 in Cook County, Illinois.  Timothy married first, Nellie Helen FENNEMA, between 1920 and 1927.  Nellie was born 20 March 1903 in Missouri and died on 26 January 1927 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.  He married second, Eleanor BRANDENBURG, on 30 June 1937 in Cook County, Illinois.  Eleanor was born on 26 March 1910 in Illinois and died on 14 December 1983 in California.

Third Generation

7. John3 Ward McMAHON (Sarah2 Jane, James1) was born on 7 April 1902 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 24 June 1962 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.  John married Emma Jane GARRISON, daughter of James Manly GARRIOSN and Sarah Jane MULLIGAN, on 26 May 1923 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.  Emma was born on 3 November 1901 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 20 October 1970 in Elk Grove Village, Cook, Illinois.

Children from this marriage were:
9
i.
Joan4 Garrison McMAHON was born on 6 February 1927 in Oak Park, Cook, Illinois, and died on 1 March 1980 in Kissimmee, Osceola, Florida.  She married John “Jack” Francis CAHILL; their only son, Joseph, was my father.

ii.
Florence June McMAHON was born on 16 November 1929 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 17 October 2009 in Big Sandy, Upshur, Texas.

Family History Through the Alphabet – Find A Grave

Family-History-Through-the-Alphabet

For 26 weeks I will take you on a family history journey through the alphabet, one letter at a time.  I have decided that each post will be educational in nature, focusing on topics related to resources, methodology, tools, etc.  Although the challenge is complete, there are still some people who are finishing up and Alona, the host, is encouraging others to participate anyway.  Additional information on the challenge, can be found at Take the ‘Family History Through the Alphabet’ Challenge

fThis week, I thought I’d talk about Find A Grave, which is a community project where people can create memorials for those who are deceased.  The memorials may contain birth date and place, death date and place, biographical information, and links to the memorials of their spouse, parents, or children.  Many memorials also contain photographs of the person’s headstone.

We should all be using this resource in our genealogy research, so in this post, I’ll discuss some tips and best practices for researchers.  You should also consider becoming a contributor and “give back” in some capacity.

FindAGrave

Remember that this is a derivative source and there could be errors.  Also remember that the stones themselves could contain errors.  And while not common, there are some deceptive people out there who have placed fake or altered photos of stones.  As with any derivative source, be careful and do your homework.

Don’t take people’s pictures without asking permission.  When a person uploads a photo to Find A Grave, the person maintains their copyright.  Downloading that photo and attaching it to your online tree, posting it on your blog, or simply saving it on your computer is a violation of that copyright.  Contact the person and explain what you plan to do with the photo(s) and ask permission.  But before you do that, check the person’s profile—they may freely grant permission through their profile.

Follow the rules.  There are a ton of FAQs provided that you should review in order to understand the rules and how to use Find A Grave effectively.  The one rule that is probably broken the most often is requesting a transfer of a memorial that does not fit the accepted criteria.

Submit corrections.  If you have information to add to a memorial or have corrections to a memorial, use the Suggest a Correction form (accessed from the Edit tab) to submit them.  This helps to build upon submissions and help other researchers.  It’s also one way to contribute and “give back” to the community.

Most people will make the changes in a timely manner.  Other times, the owner of the memorial won’t make the changes for whatever reason, or has vanished from Find A Grave.  This is of course unfortunate, but that’s just the way it sometimes works with a community project like this.  If you experience this issue, read this FAQ for how to handle it.

The other reason to send corrections is that sometimes, if the memorial owner is not related to the person, they may ask you if you want to take ownership, even if you don’t necessarily fit the criteria (see above).  As the owner, they can transfer it to anyone they like, for example, say someone is getting older and doesn’t want to manage their memorials anymore, they could transfer them to a friend or another researcher.  Most people who have added non-relatives would rather a family member take over the memorial.

Add your own photos.  Even if you are not the owner of the memorial, you do have the option to upload and share your own photos.  You can share additional gravestone photos, photos of the person and/or their family, and even upload images of documents (i.e., a death certificate).  This is another way to “give back” to the community.

UploadPhoto

Request a photo.  If you do not live in the area of a particular cemetery, you can create a memorial (if one does not already exist) and then add a photo request to it.  If there is a memorial already created, without a photo, you can still request a photo.  Volunteers in the area will be notified of the request and may “claim” the request and fulfill it.

Request

Create a Virtual Cemetery.  You can create one or many Virtual Cemeteries, which are a collection of memorials.  Many people create these for their family members, often by surname.  I’ve also seen people create Virtual Cemeteries for Revolutionary War soldiers, Confederate soldiers in the Civil War, unusual names, certain types of symbolism—the possibilities are endless.  Your Virtual Cemeteries can be public or private.

The easiest way to set up a Virtual Cemetery is to visit your profile page and choose edit button for “My Virtual Cemeteries” under the Customize section.  Then “add new,” give it a name, a description if you like, and set the privacy settings to make the Virtual Cemetery public or private.

I hope this post has given you some ideas for how you can use Find a Grave in your genealogy research.  If you have other tips you’d like to share, please leave a comment.  I’m always open to hear other people’s ideas for using various tools in genealogy.

Surname Saturday – Garrison (Ontario / Michigan / Illinois)

My earliest known GARRISON is James Manly GARRISON, who was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1861. I'm still trying to determine, with some level of certainty, who his parents are. I know his mother's name was Susan, and I suspect that she herself was a GARRISON, but I need to do some more digging to learn the truth. James and his mother relocated to Detroit, Wayne, Michigan about 1871, and James later moved to Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

First Generation

1. James Manly GARRISON, son of Susan (--?--), was born on 26 December 1861 in Picton, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada, and died on 23 May 1909 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. James married Sarah Jane "Jennie" MULLIGAN, daughter of James MULLIGAN and Sarah Norton WEBSTER, on 23 January 1893 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Sarah was born on 16 April 1870 in Flint, Genesee, Michigan, and died on 26 April 1947 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Children from this marriage were:

5
iv.

Second Generation

4. Emma Jane GARRISON (James Manly1) was born on 3 November 1901 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 20 October 1970 in Elk Grove Village, Cook, Illinois. Emma married John Ward McMAHON, son of Timothy James McMAHON and Sarah Jane WARD, on 26 May 1923 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. John was born on 7 April 1902 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died on 24 June 1962 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Surname Saturday: Schwartz (Luxembourg / Illinois)

This week I get to talk about one of my favorite families: SCHWARTZ.  It’s one of my favorites because they came from Luxembourg, which is such a wonderful place to research.  Despite the records being in German (old script at that) and/or French, neither of which I can actually read, records are abundant and readily available.  And, the women are kind enough to keep their maiden name with them at all times!  I’ve found a ton of information on this and my other Luxembourg families, in a very short period of time.  There’s still a lot of work to do, but they’ve probably been one of the easier groups of people to research.

The earliest Schwartz I’ve reached is Laurentius (a.k.a. Lorentz) SCHWARTZ, who is my fifth great-grandfather.  I don’t know much about him, his wife, or any other children, besides the child I descend from.  My direct line ancestors are in blue.

Genealogy By the States – Week 5 – Connecticut

Connecticut

I have so many Connecticut ancestors, I don’t know where to start!  The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about colonial Connecticut is that I have at least two family members who served as governor for the Colony of Connecticut.

First is my 11th great-grandfather, John Webster, who served as governor from 1656 to 1657.  He was also the deputy governor from 1655 to 1656.  Before and after these roles, he served as a magistrate from 1639 to 1655 and from 1657 to 1659.

Robert Treat, my 10th great-granduncle, served as governor from 1683 to 1698.  He served in other capacities as well, including deputy governor from 1676 to 1683 and again from 1699 to 1709.  The interesting thing about Robert’s term as governor was that in late 1687, the government of the colony seized to exist and was not reinstated until 9 May 1689.  It’s also interesting to note that Robert’s grandson, Robert Treat Paine, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence (I’ve written about that here).

Not only are John Webster and Robert Treat related to me, they are related to one another by marriage.  John’s son, Robert, married Susannah Treat, who is Robert Treat’s sister.

While I know these two men were governors of the Colony of Connecticut, I really haven’t done much research on either of them.  They are both covered extensively in their respective genealogies, History and Genealogy of the Gov. John Webster Family of Connecticut With Numerous Portraits and Illustrations (Webster and Webster, 1915) and The Treat Family: A Genealogy of Trott, Tratt, and Treat, for Fifteen Generations, and Four Hundred and Fifty Years in England and America (Treat, 1893).  And I have seen other references to each as governor in other sources.  So I thought I would compile a list of the sources I was already familiar with and see if I could find some others and share the ones available online in this post.

Before I get into the sources, I thought I’d share something really neat that I found today, while I was poking around.  I found this in The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut, Prior to the Union With New Haven Colony, May, 1665 (Trumbull, 1850), which is part of a collection of transcriptions of early public records of the colony and state of Connecticut.  I believe these signatures were obtained on 11 April 1639, when these gentlemen were elected to their respective positions.  It’s pretty neat to see the signature of my 11th great-grandfather!

The Public Records of the Colony of Connecticut [1636-1776] ...

Now for some resources.

The Connecticut State Library has a few pages dedicated to Connecticut governors, as well as biographies for each governor.

There are a set of books that are transcriptions of the public records of the colony and state of Connecticut.  They are digitized and available online.  The one’s below cover the period of time when each served as Governor (or other capacities).  It’s pretty neat to go through and see just what these men were involved with during their service to the colony.
