Perhaps My Ancestors Were There, 1891 Luxembourg Celebration

Many of you know by now that I have Luxembourg roots.  Needless to say, I closely follow the blog Luxembourgensia, written by Fausto Gardini (and own both of his Luxembourg books).  Today, he posted about an 1891 celebration of the Aurora Luxembourg Independent Club.  While none of my family is named in the article, I’m willing to bet that my family was there representing.  They lived in Aurora at the time of the event, and I know that some were members of Luxembourg societies in Aurora.  I also know that they were very proud of the Luxembourg heritage.

Although this event was reported in the Luxemberger Wort newspaper, I bet I can find something in the Aurora newspapers, and who knows, maybe a relative will be named.  So of course, as I write this, I think, wait, there is one Aurora newspaper online (Google) for that time period, let’s see what I can find there.  And thus it begins…

I start searching the four-page Aurora Daily Express beginning on 8 June 1891, as the Luxemberger Wort reported the event took place on 7 June 1891.  Nothing.  Nothing for the 9th either, but wait, there’s something on the 10th discussing the event will be TAKING PLACE “NEXT SUNDAY.”  I’m pretty sure it’s talking about the same event, since there is mention of the “grove north of town” and “new banner” (a.k.a., flag).

The article pictured above is from the 10 June 1891 edition of the Aurora Daily Express.¹  It reads:

Sunday Picnic

The Luxembergers are arranging for a great picnic, next Sunday, at Henke’s Grove, two and one-half miles northeast of the city.  Speakers will be present from Dubuque and Chicago.  The various Luxemberger societies will parade through the streets Sunday morning, headed by a brass band.  The occasion will be the dedication on a new banner.

Moving on, I checked the 15 June 1891 edition (the Monday after the event) and found the following:

This one reads: 

There was a large crowd at the Luxemburg picnic northeast of Aurora yesterday.  A wheel of fortune man tried to do business on the grounds and was unceremoniously ejected.

Not much of a report, oh well.  I checked the rest of the week and found no further mention.  But I still have the Aurora Beacon to check, so it’s on my to-do list.  I imagine I’ll find a little more on the event in the Beacon since it’s a larger paper.

Based on the two Daily Express articles and the dates of publication, it looks like the celebration actually took place on 14 June 1891, not 7 June 1891 as reported by the Luxemberger Wort newspaper.

Mary RYAN, of County Kilkenny, Ireland, is my third great-grandmother. She married John MILLETT and they had eight known children. At least three of the children left Ireland and settled in the US. My direct line ancestors are in blue.

3	ii.	Michael MILLETT was born on 10 April 1865 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Leinster, Ireland. In January 1945 he was living in New York.
4	iii.	Mary MILLETT was born on 17 November 1867 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Leinster, Ireland.
5	iv.	Robert MILLETT was born on 14 July 1872 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Leinster, Ireland.
6	v.	Ellen MILLETT was born on 14 July 1874 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Leinster, Ireland. By January 1945 she had married a ROBERTSON and was living in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

8	vii.	Catherine MILLETT was born in 1882 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Leinster, Ireland. Catherine married John POWERS.

Catherine was born on 16 April 1894 in Aurora, Kane, Illinois and died on 26 January 1925 in Aurora, Kane, Illinois Children from this marriage were:

I believe that she and her husband Carl STOFFEL were married in Germany and arrived in the US together in 1884. They settled in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, where they had seven children. Mary Eva REEDER (or LASSER) is my second great-grandmother. I am not certain if Reeder or Lasser is her maiden name because each of the records I currently have list one or the other. I suppose it's possible that she was married once before and that one of the names could be a married name. Perhaps one day I will know the answer, but for now, I'm sticking with Reeder. This family has been difficult to research for many reasons, but mainly because they moved around the country several times.  My direct line ancestors are in blue.

Surname Saturday–Hänfler (Germany / Illinois)

Minnie HÄNFLER (with variants including Henfler, Hamfler, and Hemfler) is my second great-grandmother. She was born in Germany and married Herman LEPPIN in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

I previously discovered a possible sister, Augusta HÄNFLER, who married Philipp Zimmermann, and just days ago confirmed my suspicion further with a baptism record for Augusta and Philipp's daughter naming Minnie Leppin as a witness. Clues in other church records suggest that Minnie may have had a brother, Carl HÄNFLER, and that her parents might have been Carl HÄNFLER and August --?--. Further research is needed to prove/disprove these connections.

Surname Saturday – Wach (Prussia / Illinois)

Heinrich WACH is my third great-grandfather. He was married to my third great-grandmother, Emilie WIETZKE, and I suspect he died between 1876 (last known child born) and 1884 (Emilie's child with second husband born). The family is from Pommern, Preußen, and I suspect that both Heinrich and Emilie were born there. Heinrich may have had a sister, Johanna, who married Eduard WICK, but I have not yet confirmed this suspicion. My direct line ancestors are in blue.

Amelia), was born 30 September 1845, probably in Preußen and died on 9 February 1931 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Known children from this marriage were:

Emil was born in January 1864 in or near Bromberg, Posen, Preußen, and died after 1902. Children from this marriage were:

6	i.	Heinrich3 "Henry" Fredrick MÜLLER was born on 1 June 1887 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, was baptized on 16 May 1912, and died circa 3 May 1963 in Illinois. Henry first married Katharine KOTTKA on 25 December 1909 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. The marriage ended in divorce between 1920 and 1925. Henry and Katherine had four children: Roy, Henry, Leslie, and Caroline. Henry married second, Elizabeth --?-- and had at least one son, Lawrence.

Ida and Charles had at least nine children: Evelyn, Eleanora, Laverna, Lillian, Rose, Marjorie, Roy, Raymond, and Lorraine.

Hulda married second, John Fred SEVERING on 19 January 1901 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. John was born on 19 June 1853 in Germany, and died on 4 June 1932 in Harvard, McHenry, Illinois Children from this marriage were:

Harry married Elsa Ida Anna "Elsie" BAHNFLETH, daughter of Franz Friedrich August "Frank" BAHNFLETH and Augusta Wilhemine Caroline HAMMAN, on 6 October 1917 in West Chicago, DuPage, Illinois. Elsa was born on 20 May 1897 in West Chicago, DuPage, Illinois, and died on 6 May 1961 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Harry and Elsa had three children: Dorothy, Elmer, and Harriet.
11	ii.	Erna Hulda Otillie TRAPP was born on 15 July 1897 in Illinois and died circa 29 May 1977 in Illinois. Erna married Paul Herman EBERHARDT about 1924. Paul was born on 25 October 1896 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, and died on 23 December 1969 in Illinois. Erna and Paul had one daughter, Carol.

Surname Saturday – Mulligan (Ireland / Michigan / Illinois / Canada / Ohio

James MULLIGAN is third great-grandfather. He was born on 7 December 1812 in Dublin, Ireland. By 1850, he is living in the United States. According to a genealogy compiled by my family, his daughter, Sarah Jane, was named Jane after James' sister. He may also have had a brother, Joseph, who was listed as living with James in the 1850 census, born in Ireland, and the right age to be a sibling. Also, according to the compiled genealogy, there is a note that reads: "James Mulligan's father kept a tavern a couple of miles from Dublin, at the cross-roads." Beyond these few clues, I have no idea who James' parents were, or if there are other siblings.  My direct line ancestors are in blue.

James married second, Sophia --?--, between 1850 and 1860. Sophia was born about 1823 in New York and died on 5 February 1865 in Oakland County, Michigan. Because the fate of Margaret is unknown and the date of marriage for James and Sophia is also unknown, the children below could belong to either Margaret or Sophia. However, James does list in his marriage record that Sophia is his mother. Known children from this marriage were:

Surname Saturday – Ward (Ireland / Illinois)

My WARD line is one of my more challenging lines.  The earliest known ancestor is my third great-grandfather, James WARD and I don’t know much about him.  He was apparently married prior to marrying my third great-grandmother, Bridget, but I have no information about his first wife.  The only clues come from the 1880 census, which shows James with three additional children, all born before James and Bridget married. 

And, for the longest time, I though Bridget’s maiden name was Shevlin/Shevlan, but after some digging and a closer look at their marriage certificate, I’m not so sure; she may have been married previously as well.  A lot of mystery around this family.  Here’s what I know so far.  My direct line ancestors are in blue.

1.	James1 WARD was born about 1840 in Ireland.  I suspect he died between 1887 and 1890.  James married first, an unknown woman. Known children from this marriage were:

4	iii.	John WARD was born about 1868 in Illinois.

James married second, Bridget Shevlin (not sure if this is her maiden name or a married name) on 17 May 1874 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Bridget was born about 1838 in Ireland and died on 19 July 1912 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. Known children from this marriage were:
